India China Border Dispute 2020 (Updated)

India China Border dispute is causing serious problems for the world as it can lead to world war 3.

How to end a long-term India China border dispute?

India and China are once again on the verge of war – such messages have stirred up the information space after a clash between Indian and Chinese military on a controversial section of the border. The nuclear status of conflicting powers increases the degree of tension by default, because the consequences of such a confrontation may turn out to be global without exaggeration. Especially this time, as new information became available, it became clear: the last incident was not a match for those minor skirmishes that regularly occur at the border. This time, the count of victims went to the tens. What India and China share in the Himalayas and what this unpleasant incident on the border could turn into, found out.

India and China border conflict – War between two atomic powers

The clash on the disputed stretch of the Indian-Chinese border occurred on the night of June 16 in the Ladakh region. Losses from both sides became known only the next day – at first, the information was leaked to the media, and there were dozens of victims. Soon, the Indian Ministry of Defense reported the deaths of 20 people. China did not officially publish data on its losses, so you can focus only on the data of the Indian agency ANI. It reported 43 injured Chinese, including dead and seriously wounded.

The main question is how the parties, which only two weeks ago agreed to withdraw troops from the border, allowed a conflict with so many victims. And this despite the fact that the military of both countries refuses to use firearms just to save the lives of soldiers. Obviously, the answer lies in the scale of the incident on both sides: about 500 people participated in the fight. Moreover, the conflict broke out in the late evening, and the darkness only aggravated the situation.

News 18 India claims that in the process of breeding forces, the Chinese were supposed to remove one of the tents in which the soldiers lived, but instead they simply moved it to another place. This was not liked by the Indians, who neglected the established rules for resolving such disputes and simply decided to drive the opponents out of the disputed territory.

A melee ensued, in which the Indians were stronger. But the Chinese did not think to give up – as soon as the Indian soldiers fell asleep, they climbed up the rocks and began to stone the sleeping people.

The Indians rushed into the fray again, but this time luck changed them – the Chinese had already armed themselves with pieces of metal pipes and fittings, also wrapped in barbed wire. The Indians had to hastily retreat, jumping from a five-meter height into the cold, turbulent Galvan River (Jialevenhe flows along the control line). Someone drowned due to injuries, someone due to hypothermia. The bodies of the dead, with traces of impacts on the rocks, were later caught downstream.

Made in the British empire

The long border of India and China is interrupted only in two places – where Nepal and Bhutan are located between them. At the same time, its plot in Ladakh is not the only one due to which disputes arise. Another piece of land claimed by both sides is located in the East Himalayan region and almost completely coincides with the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

The issue of disputed territories dates back to the time of the British Empire. Then two conditional lines were drawn that divided British India and China: the “Arda-Johnson line” and the “MacMagon line”. The Indians and the government of the Dalai Lama (the actual leader of the state of Tibet) recognized the border, but China did not. The Chinese have since claimed that they lost large territories because of this, and in 1959 even expressed their indignation in a diplomatic note.

First blood

Will China and India Unleash Nuclear War

In 1962, a real war began on the border. As a result of a short but bloody conflict, the Indian army suffered a crushing defeat. The Chinese occupied the strategically important Aksaychin region on the western border, which allowed them to link the two most unstable regions – Tibet and Xinjiang. India, however, considers this region to be part of its Ladakh region.

Borders formed after the conflict are now called the line of actual control. After this, attempts were repeatedly made to solve the problem of the disputed territory: two Sino-Indian agreements – from 1993 and 1996 – did not affect the situation. As a result, the line was never demarcated, so each side considers its own understanding of this conditional boundary to be true, and it is not surprising that collisions of different intensities regularly occur here.

Among others, it is worth mentioning the 2017 border conflict. Then the Chinese decided to pave the way along the Dolam plateau at the junction of three borders – India, China, and Bhutan – which they consider their territory. The Indians did not like these plans – and they decided to interfere with the construction. In response to the Indian soldiers, a stone hail fell, they did not remain in debt – and as a result, a large-scale brawl began. Traditional steel sticks and batons with nails were used. But then there were no dead.

An unconfirmed video of the conflict on the border of India and China appeared on the network in May 2020.

Fragile balance

In New Delhi, the current skirmish occurred as a result of an attempt by the Chinese side to unilaterally change the status quo. Beijing, in turn, accused India of violating the agreements. However, the official Indian reaction was restrained, which immediately made it clear that they did not want to continue the conflict. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address said that his country does not want war, but is ready to give a decent response to the instigators.

The Indian authorities now have to discuss this incident with representatives of the opposition – and in many ways, it is a domestic policy that will give an answer to the question of the further development of the situation. The leader of the main opposition force – the Indian National Congress – Rahul Gandhi has already expressed his opinion, which clearly does not promise Modi calm: “We are enough. How dare China kill our soldiers? ”

However, one should not expect real military operations even after tough negotiations with the opposition. But it is quite possible to accelerate the construction of infrastructure along the entire border and the purchase of new air defense equipment. And it is precisely these proactive gestures that are the maximum that India can afford. To fight with China is not included in the plans of any of the political forces.

Beijing also does not seek to rush into battle, because the losses from such a war will be unreasonably large. And while there are no final agreements between the countries, the Foreign Ministers of China and India, Wang Yi and Subramanyam Jaishanqar, agreed to “fairly resolve the difficult situation on the border,” reduce full tension, and must promote peace and also tranquility in the region. Against this background, the Chinese released ten Indian soldiers captured during the clashes. Further discussion of the situation is planned for June 23 with the mediation of Russia.

Information war

Do not forget that India is the largest democracy in the world in terms of population, and the government cannot but take into account the “exploding” public opinion. In the country after the conflict, formidable exclamations about the desire to take revenge were quite audible. “India must answer. Beijing cannot kill our soldiers and profit from our market, ”the Times of India wrote. The authors of the article called for at least to impose sanctions on Chinese imports.

Indian media sounded the alarm because of what was happening in April. At first, the reason was the new maps of the Chinese Map World service – they show that part of the Indian Arunachal Pradesh “has been added” to the PRC. Then, constant minor skirmishes at the border, to which the authorities reacted in silence, were also actively covered.

It is worth noting that during the coronavirus pandemic, China was repeatedly convicted of trying to carry out territorial expansion both on paper and in practice.

For example, on April 19, it became known that two new Chinese administrative districts appeared on the disputed Paracel Islands and the Spratly Archipelago (Sisha and Nansha in Chinese): they will be part of the Sansha city of Hainan Province, created by the Chinese government in 2012 to substantiate its claims for islands. Vietnam expressed a protest, but Beijing did not stop it.

The alarm also struck the commander of the US Armed Forces in Japan, Lieutenant General Kevin Schneider (Kevin Schneider). He noted that in the waters claimed by Beijing, Chinese warships and coast guards, who are pursuing foreign ships appearing there, are increasingly seeing. An increase in the activity of the Chinese naval forces was also observed in the East China Sea, where, in particular, the Diaoyu Yao (Senkaku) archipelago, which is the subject of a territorial dispute with Japan, is located. According to Schneider, thus, Beijing, apparently, is trying to intimidate other states.

China, by virtue of its political regime, has more opportunities to control internal polemics, but it will not completely stop unwanted discussions. Behind his refusal to publish data on losses during the last collision may well be the goal of not inciting belligerent moods. However, they will undoubtedly be distributed on blogs (where the derogatory word 阿三 stands for “Indian”), but not on official and affiliated sites.

Hu Sijin, editor-in-chief of the Chinese newspaper Global Times, serves as a kind of indicator of the acceptable tension in the controversy. He menacingly rebuffed the Americans over accusations with coronavirus and Hong Kong, and now he speaks from exclusively peaceful positions. In his opinion, the situation will find a mild solution – both countries “have kept a clear and cautious mind in order to keep all friction under control.”

At the same time, Beijing emphasizes that it is conducting ongoing exercises in Tibet, and in which case it is ready to give an answer
At the same time, the Chinese media recall that “restless India” only recently has had several similar incidents on the border with Nepal and Pakistan. So, since May, the situation between New Delhi and Kathmandu has remained tense. After the Nepalese side issued a statement confirming sovereignty over the disputed region, skirmishes began there and on June 12, two people died.

There was also a firefight on the border with Pakistan in the zone of disputed Kashmir on June 16. India then stated that Pakistani forces “had unprovoked mortar shelling at Indian positions in the Naugam sector”. The incident did not lead to victims. In addition, on June 15, India stated that two of its diplomats in Pakistan had been abducted and expressed official protest. Islamabad claims that the staff of the High Commission was simply arrested while trying to escape from the scene of an accident.

In China, it is believed that the Government of India with all these conflicts supposedly distracts attention from internal problems – primarily from the coronavirus pandemic. And she, it must be said, is still gaining momentum after an amazing calm start. India has already emerged in fourth place in the world in the number who have caught coronavirus infection COVID-19: they are more than 380.5 thousand people. At the same time, 200 thousand patients are considered to be recovered, and 12.5 thousand people died.

Conflict with China is undesirable for India because the country wants to pursue a multidimensional foreign policy, including with respect to the United States, which has long beckoned New Delhi to unambiguously join the anti-Beijing block. For these purposes, Washington even changed the name of the region in its concept – instead of the Asia-Pacific region, the Indo-Pacific appears in its documents. The long history of complicated relations with Beijing seems to be pushing the Indians towards an obvious choice, but in this case, they will lose room for maneuver. The transition to open hostility with China will make India too attached to the United States and will not allow talking about the independent position of regional power.

At the same time, the losses of the two nuclear powers on the territory disputed over the years, apparently, turned out to be very unexpected for the top officials of both countries and put them before an awkward choice. On the one hand, not a single leader can simply lose his brakes and forgive the enemy for spilled blood. But on the other side of the balance was the threat of escalation unnecessary to either side with all the ensuing consequences. The conflict, which has not been equal for several decades, seems to give the warring parties a chance to come to the conclusion: in 2020, living without a clear border is only to harm ourselves.
